This month’s contents in more detail …

  • Holiday in Hackney

Jo Martin looks at making the most of Hackney’s outdoor activities for your summer staycation – Did you know you can go dinghy sailing, climbing and horse riding around a nature reserve, all within the borough’s boundaries? A “staycation” is when you stay close to home for your holiday rather than going away, and Hackney is heaving with great holiday activities like these.”  Read all about these activities and many more – many of which are free or very low cost – this month’s issue of More Hackney! More Hackney – Issue 7 – August 2013

  • Drink, drugs and mental health

Our use of drink and drugs can have an impact on our mental well being, says Kerry Hudson – “Alcohol and other mind-altering drugs can be detrimental to our physical and mental health. For the one in four of us who are affected by an existing mental health problem, drugs and alcohol can be even more destructive. Ironically, those with a mental health condition are more likely to develop an addiction.” Read all about “dual diagnosis” and Hackney’s Alcohol Recovery Service in August’s More Hackney! More Hackney – Issue 7 – August 2013

  • My continuing journey with Time to Change

Hackney resident Nikki Llewellyn shares more of her experiences working with the national mental health anti-stigma campaign – “The week before World Mental Health Day last year, I found myself with a dilemma: I had been invited to attend two events! I could either travel to Liverpool with the Time to Change Village, where Time to Change would set up tents and refreshments in an area and catch the attention of passersby to talk about mental health; or I could attend a pledge signing, where organisations sign a pledge to say that theysupport the Time to Change campaign, at the headquarters of the Department of Health. Decisions, decisions …” Read all about Nikki’s latest adventures with Time to Change in More Hackney’s August issue! More Hackney – Issue 7 – August 2013

June 14, 2013 / More Hackney

Come along & join the team at Hackney’s wellbeing & mental health newsletter – we’ve published 6 issues!

Kerry Hudson (3)

More Hackney is a monthly 4-page newsletter written by and for people with mental health problems living or working in Hackney. It will also be of interest to carers, family, friends and colleagues. It contains varied contents, including listings, news, articles, interviews, humour and reviews.

Do you want to be involved in this exciting project which has been running since 2012? There’s much more to a newsletter than writing, so there are lots of ways you can get involved, share your skills, learn new skills, build your confidence and contribute to your local community.

We’re very friendly, so why not come along any Wednesday at 2pm at the Centre for Better Health (1A Darnley Road, Hackney, London E9 6QH) and meet the friendly team? And check the upcoming trainings section for a free session on various aspects of newsletter production. Read on to find out more.

.

Here are some of the ways you can get involved:

  • Join the editorial team

(more details here) The team of people who regularly attend the editorial meetings and coordinate all aspects of the newsletter – Kerry Hudson (pictured above right) is one of our editorial team

  • Write articles, reviews & interviews

You can write  regular or occasional pieces for the newsletter, such as articles, reviews and interviews – whether you’re an experienced writer or are looking to gain experience, if you’ve got something to write about then More Hackney could be the way to get into print! Read our ethos statement for what sort of writing we’re looking for

  • Distribution

The newsletter needs to be distributed once a month to venues throughout Hackney. This is a really key role because, without people to distribute the newsletter, no one will know about its great content! Do you fancy spending a hour or so cycling, walking or driving round dropping off copies? You could go with a friend and make it more fun!

  • Get involved in the listings

We’re always looking for help with listings, such as checking newsletters we subscribe to, internet searches and calling venues. This is another crucial role, so we can spread the word about the great events taking place in Hackney. Read our ethos statement for the sort of listings we’re looking for.

  • Databases

Help build and update our databases of contacts for listings and distribution. If this is something that would interest you, it’s another vital role

  • Take photos or make artwork

Photos and artwork help to bring the  newsletter alive. They’ll accompany pieces such as interviews we conduct or events taking place in Hackney.

  • Social media

Such as Twitter, facebook and website updates.

  • Layout and editing

We currently use Scribus. Do you have layout and editing skills or want to learn?

.

If you want to find out more, you can phone or email, or come along to any editorial meeting:

  • research skills
  • article writing (creative writing and journalism)
  • interview techniques

SPRING IN YOUR STEP

In London marathon month, Jo Martin looks at getting fit and active outdoors

.

Each spring, inspired by the London Marathon, Hackney’s parks and pavements start to fill up with experienced and novice runners. Jogging and running combine two things that are beneficial for physical and mental health: being outdoors and being active. No special equipment is required and there are friendly running groups throughout Hackney you can join for free or for just £2 per session. Read on to find out how you can get started, even if you’re a couch potato who can only jog for 60 seconds. And perhaps you’ll be doing your first
5km (3 mile) run in just 6 weeks time!

GETTING STARTED

When beginning to exercise, it’s important to take it slowly and build up gradually. Patience and consistency are key. All you’ll need is a pair of running shoes and, if you’re a woman, a good sports bra. Useful extras are clothing made from sports fabric (rather than cotton, which holds onto sweat); a cap or visor to keep the sun (or rain!) out of your eyes; and a zipped pocket for your keys.

You’ll find lots of helpful free content on running websites like Runners World. For instance, there are training plans to get you from non-runner to running 5km in 8 or even 6 weeks. Here are two examples:

FREE & LOW COST RUNNING GROUPS

The easiest way to get started is to go along to one of the many running groups in Hackney. Running in company is a great way to get the motivation you may need to get into a regular routine, as well as encouragement, guidance and support. It’s also more fun!

As part of the Olympic legacy, Run England trained lots of new community running leaders, so many new free and low cost running groups have sprung up across Hackney. You can find these in two ways. First, go to the Run England website and use the “find a running group” tab. There are currently 10 registered Run England groups. Second, details of running groups can be found on the council’s website. Contact the group leader beforehand to check the details are up to date.

Groups are usually made up of between five and sixteen people. Everyone is welcome, from slow joggers to fast runners and routes are accessible to people of all abilities. You’ll be taken through a structured session at a pace you can manage, so you can gradually build up your fitness, as well as increasing how long and how far you can run.

TIPS AND TRICKS

Here are my tips for getting into running and getting the most out of it.

  • Don’t be embarrassed running on the streets of Hackney, thinking everyone is looking at you – they aren’t! At this time of year, there will be a lot of new runners about.
  • Get into a regular breathing rhythm when running, in time with your strides.
  • Go at your own pace and don’t be put off by people overtaking you.
  • Music is a great way to motivate yourself when running and there are free downloads and motivational playlists from experienced runners.
  • There are numerous free running apps for your phone, such as:
    • My Fitness Pal
    • iRunner
    • Nike + running
    • Map My Run
    • Runtastic

TAKING IT UP A NOTCH

If you want more, try the Victoria Park Harriers, a friendly club for athletes of all abilities. You can also think about entering a race or a distance runs, so you have a goal to aim for. Many running groups will do this as part of their programme.

Or, when you’ve been running for a few weeks, why not try Park Run on Hackney Marshes? Every Saturday at 9am, they hold a free timed 5km run. You can join in whatever your pace – it’s for beginners to Olympians. It’s not a competitive race: you’re running against your own time. The first time, you might just be pleased to make it
round the course!

Even if you’ve never run before, you could be running your first 5km run in 6 weeks. Why not give it a go? And maybe next year it will be you running in the London marathon, raising money for your favourite mental health charity.

The service is independent, free and provided by several organisations in Hackney, tailored to certain groups.
